The second digit of the number is smaller than the first digit by 4 and if the number is divided by digits sum,the quotient would be 7.find the number?

ReplyDeleteso the number is 10x+(x-4)=>11x-4
sum=x+x-4=>2x-4
(11x-4)/(2x-4) = 7.
=> x=8.
so other digit is 4.
Therefore, the number is 84.
The answer is 84.

ReplyDeleteWay 1)Let the digits be ab,
Second digit b=a-4
The number is ten times the first digit plus second digit=10a+(a-4)=11a-4
Digits sum=a+(a-4)=2a-4
(11a-4)/(2a-4)=Quotient=7
11a-4=7(2a-4)
3a=24
a=8
b=a-4=8-4=4
So, the number is 84
Way 2) b=a-4
Possibilities are: 51,62,73,84,95
Given quotient=7
So, the answer is 84

The digits sum, i.e 8+4=12
The quotient is 7, when its divided by the digits sum, i.e 84/12=7

The number = 10t + t-4 = 11t - 4
Digits' sum = t + t-4 = 2t - 4
If the number were divided by the digit's sum, the quotient would be 7
11t - 4
——————— = 7
2t - 4
Multiply both sides by (2t - 4)
11t - 4 = 7(2t - 4)
11t - 4 = 14t - 28
-3t = -24
t = 8
The second digit is t-4 = 8-4 = 4
So the number is 84.
