Todays Puzzle:
Two trains start from A to B and B to A. If they arrive at their destinations one hour and four hours respectively after passing one another, how fast is one train running than the other?
One train is four times the speed of the other.
ReplyDeletetrain 1 speed is twice that of train 2
ReplyDeleteLet v1-speed of train from A to B(train1)
ReplyDeletev2- speed of train2,
x be the distance from A to B,
a be the distance from A till meet point
(i.e.)train1 travels a km and train2 travels x-a km.
time taken by train1 to travel a=time taken by train2 to
travel x-a
a/v1=x-a/v2, v1/v2=a/x-a
given
time taken by train1 to travel x-a=1hr
x-a/v1=1, x-a=v1
time taken by train2 to travel a=4hrs
a/v2=4, a=4v2
therefore s1/s2=4s2/s1
s1:s2=2:1
train1 speed=twice the speed of train2
Train 1 Train 2
ReplyDeleteSpeed v1 v2
Diastance d1 d2
covered
The train meets after time 't'
d1=v1*t, d2=v2*t,(speed=distance travelled/time taken)
so, d1/d2= v1/v2....(1)
After crossing,
Train 1 takes 4 hours and train 2 takes 1 hour
d1=v2*1, d2=v1*4
Hence, d1/d2=v2/(4v1)....(2)
Comparing equations (1) & (2),
v1/v2=v2/(4v1), v1/v2=2
Hence, v1=2v2
Lets assume the distance covered is D
ReplyDeleteTime taken for the train from A to B to cover the distance D = 1 hour
Time taken for the train from B to A to cover the distance D = 4 hours.
So the train from A to B must run 4 time faster than train from B to A to cover the distance D.
i.e if train from B to A run at 20km/h then train from A to B must run 4 * 20km/h = 80km/h to cover the same distance D
Train A is Twice fast as Train B
ReplyDeletetrain A travels two times fast as train B
